Overcoming Stage Fright: A Path to Confident Public Speaking

Dear 7 Set Spark Community,

Many of us, as members of the Ethiopian youth, have experienced the unease of stage fright, often stemming from a lack of practice in public speaking during our formative years. Culturally, the encouragement to speak in public settings is not abundant, contributing to these apprehensions. But what you might not be aware of is the fact that the fear of public speaking, also known as glossophobia, affects many people around the world; more specifically 75% of people in the world. [1] Yet, it’s crucial to recognize that fear of public speaking is a common challenge, and overcoming it is within your grasp. Here are insightful strategies to conquer stage fright and flourish in public speaking:

Understanding Stage Fright and Its Origins

  1. Embrace Mistakes:Memories of past errors during public speaking might haunt you, but it’s essential to remember that making mistakes is part of learning. Maybe you did badly on your 10th-grade chemistry presentation or maybe you potentially didn’t know what to say when asked to speak at a family gathering. These experiences do not define your abilities. Recognize and challenge the beliefs formed from these memories; they’re not necessarily true.

  1. Debunking Performance Anxiety:Stage fright or performance anxiety ranges from mild jitters to debilitating fear. It often emerges from worry about presenting, diverting focus from the message to anxiety about the audience’s response. 90% of the anxiety we feel before making a presentation comes from lack of preparation. [2]

Coping Tools to Tackle Stage Fright

  1. Breathe and Relax:Proper breathing and relaxation techniques are crucial. The 3-4-5 Breathing method—inhaling for 3 seconds, holding for 4, and exhaling for 5—provides instant relaxation and can significantly alter your mental state. Breathing exercises outlined by Physiopedia include one that is called ‘Box Breathing’ which is helpful with relaxation and they claim that it is a breathing exercise to assist patients with stress management and can be implemented before, during, and/or after stressful experiences. 1. Work with Fear, Not Against It:Accept the nervousness as part of the process. Overcome anxiety by acknowledging its presence and leveraging it to drive better preparation and understanding of your topic.

  1. Arrive Early and Acclimate:Arriving early at your venue allows you to familiarize yourself with the environment, reducing pre-performance stress and offering time for calming exercises.

  1. Learn to Improvise:Embrace the unpredictability of live presentations. Accepting the possibility of errors reduces the fear of making mistakes. Involve the audience in your journey, easing tension and fostering a supportive environment.

  1. Put Your Adrenaline to Work:Understand that the adrenaline rush before a presentation is natural and can add energy to your performance.

  1. Visualize Success and Rationalize:Engage in positive visualization and replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Remind yourself that the situation isn’t life-threatening.
  2. Talk, Don’t Present:Shift your mindset from presenting to conversing. Engage with your audience as if having a dialogue, easing pressure and enhancing connection.

  1. Move and Turn the Spotlight:Don’t confine yourself to one spot. Movement can alleviate stress. Mentally shift the spotlight from you to the audience, creating a relaxed ambiance.

Conclusion: Embrace Growth and Continuous Improvement

Stage fright is a common hurdle but not an insurmountable one. Embrace the learning process, seek opportunities to speak publicly, and utilize these strategies to navigate stage fright. Understand that each experience builds your confidence and expertise. Remember, fellow Ethiopian youth, the power to overcome stage fright lies within you. Embrace every chance to speak, learn from each experience, and watch as your confidence in public speaking blossoms.
